Lassen Volcanic National Park – Mineral, California
This area gives you a fabulous opportunity for the winter sports that you love! With the elevation and the influence of the Pacific Ocean the park receives upwards of 40 FEET of snow per year. The park consists of 106,372 acres for enjoyment at any time of the year.
In the summer there are over 150 miles of hiking trails within the park which range in difficulty from a strenuous 5 mile round-trip hike up to Lassen Peak to a gentle 1.5 mile stroll around Manzanita Lake.
You can also do the auto tour of the area, enjoy stargazing, backpacking, fishing, bird watching, hiking, boating and kayaking or even horseback riding. If you want more information on the park you can attend one of the Ranger led programs.
In the winter you can do cross-country/telemark skiing/ winter camping and of course snowshoeing. With 40 ft of snow you can do nearly anything in the park that is winter related.
There are 8 campgrounds within the park and a large part of the park available for wilderness camping with a free permit.
The park is dependent on the weather and snow condition so if there is heavy snow the park road may open as late as July 20th but could open as early as May 15 on light snow years. For the same reasons, access to many trails may be restricted or limited to those with snowshoes.
The park is a remote mountain park full of solitude and abundant recreational activities. If you don’t like solitude this may not be the place for you to visit, but if you love beauty, quiet and peace this may be just the place for you.
Headquarters Information Desk is open year around Monday – Friday 8 – 4:30. Closed on holidays.
Phone: 530-595-4444
Location: In the town of Mineral on State Route 36 East, 9 miles outside of the park.
While there you can visit the Loomis Museum with its documentation of the most recent eruption cycle in 1914 – 15.
