Protecting travelers on the Shasta-Yreka Road and the Lockhart Ferries was the purpose of the building of the fort in 1857. The fort consisted of 25-30 log buildings enclosed by a pine-pole stockade 12 feet high. This stockade makes this fort different from many, although the movies and TV show the stockades surrounding the forts in reality not all had them, they often built the fort on the most advantageous lay of the land for protection rather than building the stockade.

This 1886 (completed in January of 1887) three span covered bridge is the only known three span covered bridge in the United States. The spans were built in sections of 30 ft., 130 ft, and 80 ft for a total of 240 ft.. At the time it was first opened for traffic it was not covered.
 
Because it is a treasure to the area it has been preserved and is now used only for pedestrian traffic.

Shasta Dam was built above Redding, California on the Sacrament River between 1938 and 1945. It is ranked as one of the great civil engineering feats of the world. The dam is 602 feet high and 3,260 ft. long with a base thickness of 543 ft. With the dam in place the reservoir known as Shasta Lake was created.
