These two Berkeley, California attractions are located on the southern part of the UC Berkeley campus. The UC Berkeley Art Museum is found at 2626 Bancroft Way, and the Pacific Film Archive is accessed through the Berkeley Art Museum. For anyone who loves art or film these museums are must-see attractions.
The Berkeley Art Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The admission to the art museum is free for students, faculty, staff and children younger than 12 years of age. The admission price is $8 for adults ages 18-64, and $5 for non-Berkeley students, people ages 13-17, and senior citizens and disabled people. The first Thursday of every month is free admission at 5:30 p.m. for First Impressions by BAM/PFA.
The art gallery holds over 13,000 works of art. The Berkeley Art Museum was made possible by artist and teacher Hans Hofmann, who donated the first works of art and money to start funding the museum. Since then, the collection has grown to include a diverse range of artwork. The museum is known for Asian art, both historical and contemporary, early American paintings, Conceptual art, contemporary international art, and both California and local art. The Art Museum is also home to Café Muse, an interesting café that includes excellent raw food and many delicious soups and sandwiches, as well. Café Muse has been recognized by various publications for their innovative food.
Inside the Berkeley Art Museum is the Pacific Film Archive. The purpose of this archive was to be able to exhibit films under excellent conditions and to promote the understanding and appreciation of film, as well as how to preserve it. It is open Monday through Thursday from 1-5 p.m. Students and faculty are free, and everyone else is charged $3 for admission. The Pacific Film Archive and Film Study Center is an important reference tool for many different people, including students, scholars, filmmakers and journalists, to name a few. There are also exhibits that relate to the film industry for people to enjoy.
There are over 10,000 films in the archive, along with many film related materials that are often used for research. These materials include books, posters, audio tapes, catalogs, and articles about various filmmakers and related subjects. The PFA is a collection containing many films. It includes a large collection of Japanese films, silent Soviet films, avant-garde films of the West Coast, rare animation, European and Central Asian films and many international classic films. The films and videos are stored in a temperature and humidity controlled vault. Screenings of certain films can be arranged ahead of time. The Pacific Film Archive Theater also shows various movies for $4.
