While the attractive and interesting city of Berkeley, California offers many things to do, one of the best ways to spend some time is by going to Tilden Regional Park. There are two entrances to the park, one off of Wildcat Canyon Road and one off Grizzly Peak Boulevard. Either entrance leads to a ton of different activities that cater to everyone at every age and with every interest. The hours at Tilden Regional Park are from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. There is no fee for parking, entering the park or taking a dog into the park; however, there is a fee for swimming at Lake Anza, which is located in the park.
There are over 2,000 acres to Tilden Regional Park, which was named for Charles Lee Tilden, who was the first president of the Park District Board of Directors. These beautiful acres are home to many activities. One of the most popular things to do in Tilden Park is picnicking. There are several hundred different picnic sites that can be reserved, and they are in a variety of areas.
Lake Anza is another attraction in Tilden Park. The Lake is available for swimming and fishing. During the swimming season, which runs from March to October, entrance to the lake is just $3.50 per person for ages 16-61, and just $2.50 for those under sixteen and those over sixty-one. There is a nice sandy beach for people to use, and lifeguards are on hand during the season. There is also a refreshment stand and changing areas for the convenience of guests. Lake Anza is available for fishing year round.
The park includes a steam train, which provides rides on a smaller scale steam engine, which is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and is just $1.75 for a scenic ride. Camping sites are available, and include sites for camping with horses. There is also a lovely 18-hole golf course, the Tilden Park Golf Course, complete with a driving range, pro-shop, and restaurant. The Nimitz Way offers a paved walkway throughout some of the most scenic areas of the park, and offers additional hiking opportunities along the way.
Tilden Regional Park also contains a Botanic Garden. It is well-known for its most complete collection of native California plants. This also includes some that are endangered and rare. It is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day except major holidays, and there is no fee to enjoy the garden. The Botanic Garden is a beautiful addition to the Park.
For the younger members of any group, Tilden Regional Park offers an antique carousel with hand-carved and painted fanciful animals to ride to delightful calliope music. The carousel is open year round, but the hours vary according to the season and weather. Rides are just $1 for a chance to enjoy the simple pleasure of a merry-go-round. Children can also enjoy Tilden’s nature area and little farm, which give them a chance to learn about many different plants and animals.
Tilden Regional Park is one of Berkeley’s oldest parks, and it is considered the best one to visit. It is not hard to see why, with the many activities available to pique the interest of every member of the family.
