Point Sur, California is where visitors can find Point Sur State Historic Park and Lighthouse. When visitors come upon the site, they are taken aback by the Lighthouse and various buildings that perch on top of a huge piece of volcanic rock that is just off California’s shore. The lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places but is still in use with a modern beacon that lights the way for boats and ships of all sizes.
The Point Sur lighthouse has been in use since 1889. In 1974, the last of the lighthouse families left the island, and the stone lighthouse went through a restoration and modernization process. Visitors can take a guided tour of the lighthouse and outbuildings. There are many things to enjoy while visiting Point Sur Historic Park. Visitors can see the whales during their yearly migrations. They can catch glimpses of various birds, including pelicans, peregrine falcons or eagles. Nature is up close and personal at Point Sur, with beautiful wildflowers, crashing surf and fog, sunshine and wind. There are even moonlight tours that include possible encounters with light keepers of the past.
The tour lasts for three hours and is conducted by volunteers who are knowledgeable about the area. It includes walking less than a mile and climbing several flights of stairs. The tour begins by meeting along the west side of Highway 1 at the farm gate. This is nineteen miles south of Rio Road in Carmel, and is also a quarter mile north of the Pt. Sur Naval Facility. Tours can be taken year round on Saturdays at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Sundays there is one tour at 10:00 a.m. In the summer months from April to October, tours are also done on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. In July and August, there is also a tour at 10:00 a.m. on Thursdays, as well. The Moonlight Tours run during April to October on various dates as listed. However, these tours are not considered appropriate for children less than six years of age. It is important to arrive early, as the tour leaves on time. No reservations are accepted, and tickets are sold on a first come basis. Tours can be cancelled in the event of bad weather.
Ticket prices for the tour are $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 6-17. Children under six are admitted for free. There are no pets allowed and strollers may not be used. There is no picnicking, eating or drinking while on the island. It is important to remember that the weather can change without notice, and the weather can be cold and windy even in the summer. It is recommended to bring appropriate clothing.
Point Sur State Historic Site is a wonderful stop for any tourist who wishes to find out a little bit more about the significance of the lighthouse atop the rocks.
