On your next visit to California, take the opportunity to view an outstanding collection of art at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. You can see a wide variety of art in the Museum’s permanent, current and special ongoing exhibits.

The Museum’s unique collection includes Ancient Art, Asian Art, and French, English, and American Art from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Photography, works on paper, and International Modernism are some of the Museum’s additional areas of specialty.

You can tour the Santa Barbara Museum of Art independently, or take advantage of docent-led gallery tours. These informal tours highlight selections of artwork displayed in a special exhibit or collection, or cover a variety of art on display. The tours present an excellent opportunity to discuss and ask questions about the artwork and artists.

The Asian galleries at the Museum of Art in Santa Barbara contain a very impressive selection of Japanese, Tibetan, Chinese, and Indian art. The Museum’s collection consists of more than 2,600 objects that span a period of 4,000 years. Highlights of the Asian Art collection include Japanese lacquer, Chinese textiles and ceramics, Hindu and Buddhist sculptures, and Japanese lacquer and woodblock prints.

The collection of Latin American art from the 20th century displayed at the Museum presents visitors with a unique opportunity to see some very beautiful and intriguing art. Works by Mexican artists of the post World War II period, artists of the post-revolutionary period in Mexico, and modern and contemporary art by Cuban, Chilean and Uruguayan artists are featured in the Museum’s collection.

The collection of Modernist art at the Museum includes works by European and American artists. Cubism, Constructivism and Vorticism are included in the museum’s collection. Fauvist and expressionist works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Emile Nolde, Alexej Jaelensky and many others are featured at the Museum. Surrealist paintings by Salvador Dali and Joan Miro are exhibited, as well. Works by American Modernist artists include sculptures by Gaston Lachaise and works by Joseph Stella and Milton Avery.

Those interested in viewing works by Californian artists will appreciate the large representation within the Museum’s Modern and Contemporary art collection. Works by Bay Area figurative artists David Park and Richard Diebenkorn, and examples of John McLaughlin’s Abstract Classicist art are displayed at the Museum. You can also see work by Californian artists of the 1950s, including Karl Benjamin and Frederick Hammersley. More modern works are displayed, as well, including art by Jud Fine, Alexis Smith, Hung Liu and Emilio Sanchez.
