Newland House Museum - Huntington Beach, California
Newland House Museum - Huntington Beach, California
In 1898 the Newlands built a Victorian farmhouse overlooking what was once called the Santa Ana Gap, marshy lowland between Huntington Beach and Costa Mesa. This Queen Anne Victorian architecture house is believed to be the only remaining example of its type in Huntington Beach.
The dominate feature of the original Newland House is its octagonal turret. The view from this area is stunning.
You will begin your tour on the back porch of the house. As you go through you will be told the story of how the Newlands ended up in this area, how with 10 children it was necessary to have a home big enough to hold everyone.
The kitchen of the museum is set up very similarly as to how it would have been during the days when the house was first constructed and then evolved throughout time. When the house was first built there was no running water (so the boys had to go to the well in town and haul the water back in wooden barrels.) Then, in 1900 Mr. Newland built the water tower you will see when you come to the museum. He also had a windmill built next to the tower and a well dug in the same area. It’s a good thing that there was water available for the house since Mrs. Newland would prepare all the meals for the family and for the hired hands which could number to 50 during harvest time!
The kitchen wood burning stove and a fireplace in the dining room were the heat sources for the house. These rooms would be warm in the winter and in the summer the kitchen would be hot with all the cooking.
The house if filled with original furnishings from the family. The guides will tell you the whole history and stories to keep you both entertained and informed.
The museum is available for tours Saturday ad Sunday Noon – 4 PM (except holidays.)
