Discover the marine life of the Pacific Ocean at the Aquarium of the Pacific. It’ll be a meet and greet for you and over 12,500 marine animals that normally reside in the areas of Southern California and Baja, the much colder North Pacific, and the more tropical areas of the Pacific as well.
There are many exciting exhibits at the Aquarium of the Pacific, starting with Shark Lagoon. Here you’ll find more than 150 sharks and rays on exhibit. Some of them you’ll be able to touch, and some of the them you definitely won’t want to. There are specific shark touch pools, interactive displays, and a theatre as well. And if you’re so inclined, there is also a gift store and cafe in the area.
Perhaps you enjoy maintaining your own fish tank at home, and wonder what it would be like on a much grander scale. The Aquarium of the Pacific gives you the opportunity with a Behind the Scenes Tour. You can see how the animals’ meals are prepared and will get the opportunity to feed one of the animals yourself. Ten people at a time are allowed to go on the tour, and the charge if $15.00 per person, or $11.00 for members of the aquarium.
Both children and adults will enjoy watching a 3-D animated film, AnimalVision 3-D. This film includes important environmental messages that show how the things we do here at home can affect the animal life around the world. Animals such as polar bears, sea turtles, apes and others from the rainforest are included in the movie. Admission for the movie is $3.00 for non-members, and $2.75 for members. It is shown multiple times throughout the day.
A special exhibit has now become available at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Dazzling and Dangerous – Venomous Creatures showcases the beautiful and dangerous animals that live beneath the ocean and also on land, such as octopus, waspfish, gila monsters, and snakes. Included in this exhibit are a guide book, free film, behind-the-scenes tour, and surprise animal encounters. The cost is $15.00 per person, or $11.00 for members of the aquarium.
The Aquarium of the Pacific is just part of The Pike at Rainbow Harbor which includes many fine establishments for dining, shopping, and entertainment. In Long Beach, California, it’s only minutes away from the convention center, the downtown area, the Queen Mary, and Belmont Shore. There’s enough food, shopping, entertainment, and learning here to make a fascinating long weekend.
Located at 100 Aquarium Way in Long Beach, the aquarium is open every day from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM except for Christmas Day and the weekend of the Grand Prix of Long Beach. Adults are admitted for $19.95, seniors for $16.95, and children ages 3 through 11 for $11.95. If you care to include the behind-the-scenes tour, adults pay $38.95 altogether, seniors pay $35.95, and children ages 3 through 11 pay $28.95.
